The raccoon underwent a third surgery for her burns on Thursday, Jan. 11, but more tissue had become necrotic since the last procedure.
Cape Wildlife Center said in a follow-up Facebook post on Friday, Jan. 12:
“We removed the damaged tissue and applied honey to help with the healing process. Her vitals were stable throughout the process. This morning we found her more lethargic than usual and shortly after her morning meds she arrested. Though CPR was attempted and emergency medications administered, we simply weren’t able to get her back.”
The center had added some chicken nuggets to her diet as a special treat during her last checkup.
“She loved them!” the staff wrote in another Facebook post before the recent update. “Safe to say we will be making more trips through the drive-through in coming days while she gets back in her feet.”
Andrew Chieu was arrested on Dec. 30, when Quincy police arrived at Royal Street home to break up a fight between him and a neighbor. The raccoon was found in a trap with a fire burning in the backyard.
Cape Wildlife Center thanked everyone who offered their support for the animal throughout her final days.
